Behind The Design
This pattern’s evocative name- Indian Summer - carries a very satisfying freight of associations, with Jaipur, one of my very favourite places of all. Rajasthan’s biggest city thrums with the energy of thousands of craft workshops. It is also unique in that every building in the city, including every palace, market and temple is painted in a unique and beautiful earthy Jaipur pink!
The Indian Summer design calls to mind the magical flush of the pink and gold hues of late summer months- and even the surprise late last flowering of summer in a few warm sun filled days in October: an imperative invitation to take tea out into the garden for one last time.
This gorgeous pattern is made of informal repeats of stylised but recognisable tiny pink carnation-cousins known as Pinks- whose petals seem to have been snipped with tiny scissors.
The colours are rich and pleasing and they sing of summer and happiness, whilst the associated pattern of Diamond Blocks is a strong companion: combining the 2 patterns feels like playing with printed cotton scraps to make a patchwork quilt.
All the associations of this design are full of joy- combining summer gardens, evening time in Jaipur, the prettiest flowers, and the deep deep satisfactions of making and decorating.
